A group of us stood on the abandoned Monon in 1987 and imagined a rail trail busy with walkers, joggers and cyclists. Today, the Monon is a terrific community amenity enjoyed routinely by a whole buncha people. (For statisticians and grumpy young men, "a whole buncha" is an actual, verifiable number.)
This photo is looking north across the White River. The rails had been removed from the bridge, leaving only the crossties and the stone pillars. Most of the ties were sturdy, though a few were missing. I rode my mountain bike across it once, which was a very rough ride as my tires banged from tie to tie. Photo by Doug Smith, 1987.
A view taken from the bridge, looking upstream. You can see the worn condition of some of the ties. Photo by Doug Smith, 1987.
